東京芸術大学名誉教授、文化功労者で日本画家。広島県出身。「文化財赤十字活動」の名のもと、カンボジアのアンコール遺跡救済活動や敦煌の莫高窟の保存事業などで知られる。従三位に叙され、文化勲章も受賞した。日本における敦煌研究者としても活躍し、中国での壁画修復事業に際して、日本画の重ね技法を指導するなど、現地での失われた美術技法の再構築と人材育成にも尽力した。

Professor emeritus of Tokyo University of the Arts, person of cultural merit, and Japanese painter. Born in Hiroshima Prefecture. Under the name of ``Cultural Heritage Red Cross Activities'', it is known for its work to rescue the Angkor ruins in Cambodia and the preservation project of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. He was awarded the rank of Junior Third Rank and received the Order of Culture. He was also active as a Dunhuang researcher in Japan, and during a mural restoration project in China, he taught the layering technique of Japanese paintings, and worked hard to reconstruct lost art techniques in China and foster human resources.
