1930年（昭和5年）4月1日 - 早稲田大学山岳部出身 で同大学を卒業したばかりの川崎吉蔵により創設された。同年5月、「多くの人に読んでもらえる山岳雑誌をつくりたい」との思いから、山岳雑誌『山と溪谷』が創刊された。当時は隔月刊であった。
