J.P. Hogan is a science fiction writer born in London, England. Early works classified as hard science fiction conveyed the feelings of science and scientists. His view is that theories should be formulated solely on the basis of empirical research, and that if there is a discrepancy between theory and reality, it is the theory, not the reality, that should be discarded. This philosophy is most evident in his Ganymean series, and his work reflects an anti-authoritarian attitude. Anarchism and libertarianism are often important themes in the novel, and the argument is often made that technological innovations make certain social conventions obsolete.
The ``Star of the Giants'' series, which won the ``Nebula Award,'' is a story about a scientist who discovers human remains from 50,000 years ago on the moon and engages in their investigation. Hogan has won this award three times in Japan.
