少年時代
青森県弘前市（当時は東奥義塾弁論部OBで警察署勤務の特高警察刑事）に長男として生まれる。八郎は転勤のため県内各所を転々とし、出生について「走っている列車の中で生まれ、故郷はない」と語っていたが、青森県弘前市紺屋町（当時は上北郡六戸村）で生まれた。1941年（昭和16年）、八戸市へ移り、1945年（昭和20年）の青森大空襲により焼け出される。その後伯父を頼って三沢駅前の寺山食堂に転居し、古間木小学校に転校する。
