哲学者（臨床哲学・倫理学）、評論家、大阪大学名誉教授、京都市立芸術大学名誉教授。サントリー文化財団副理事長、京都コンサートホール館長を歴任した。現在は関西大学文学部教授。また大阪大学総長も務めた。
専門は臨床哲学・倫理学で、現象学や身体論を研究している。著書に『モードの迷宮』や『顔の現象学』などがある。また「臨床哲学」という言葉を最初に使った人物でもある。この「臨床哲学」は、「人間の問題が起こる場所で、それに直面したときの人間の行動と、その場で考えられること」を考察することである。
1990年代、フランス発祥の哲学カフェを日本に初めて持ち込んだ。哲学者の活動においても、さまざまな役割を担った。また「身体」を「からだ」と読む（捉える）ことを重視し、「自分の感情が露出してしまう顔もじかにみることはできない」という考え方がある。
