野中郁次郎は、経営学者として知られ、一橋大学名誉教授やカリフォルニア大学バークレー校特別名誉教授、日本学士院会員でもありました。組織学会会長も務めました。知識経営の生みの親と呼ばれる人物です。
東京都墨田区出身ですが、太平洋戦争中に疎開先でグラマンF6Fヘルキャットによる機銃掃射を受けますが、その際に米兵の姿を見て復讐を誓いました。兄と同じ東京都立第三商業高等学校に進学し、卒業後は兄の友人が務めていた富士電機製造株式会社に入社。就職活動では朝日新聞社も受けていましたが、補欠合格だったため、兄の友人の紹介で富士電機製造を受かったという。
大学卒業後、工場勤労担当から幹部研修やマーケティングなどを担当し、その間に会社で様々な業務を行いました。しかし、アメリカ留学を決意するようになり、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校経営大学院に進学しました。その際は、留学資金が手元になかったため、会社から50万円の借り入れや友人からのカンパで資金を捻出しました。
アメリカでは妻が働き生活を支え、経営学修士(MBA)取得を経て博士号を取得した。その後は南山大学助教授、教授として活動し、1979年に防衛大学校教授に就任。日本軍の研究成果は『失敗の本質』として出版され、大きな反響を呼びました。
一橋大学で活動する今井賢一教授の紹介で、一橋大学商学部附属産業経営研究施設（現：同大学イノベーション研究センター）教授に就任し、米倉誠一郎助手と親しくなり、ハーバード大学に留学させた。また沼上幹や網倉久永を指導した。
