Japanese historian Ryoji Motomura was born in 1947. His specialty is the social history of ancient Rome. For his contributions to this research, he has received the Suntory Academic Award, the JRA Equine Culture Award, and the Mediterranean Society Award.
He is known as a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo. After graduating from Hitotsubashi University's Faculty of Sociology in 1973, he withdrew from the doctoral program at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Humanities in 1980. He also received guidance from Yuge Tatsu (Roman history) and Yamada Kingo (German history).
