26歳で助手の職を辞任し、スキーに挑戦するも、アマチュア資格を剥奪され、アマチュアスキー界永久追放の憂き目に遭う。しかし、その後は体力を鍛え直す意味も込めて、北アルプスの立山で歩荷として働いていた。
