**生い立ちと経歴**
岡山県岡山市出身。兄の道垣内正人は東京大学名誉教授であり、同じく法学者でもある。1966年（昭和41年）に兄が門下生だった米倉明に弟を紹介したのが知り合いの始まりである。
1978年に岡山県立岡山操山高等学校を卒業し、1982年に東京大学法学部第1類を卒業。その後は同大学の助手や筑波大学社会科学系講師、神戸大学法学部助教授などを経て、2000年から東京大学大学院総合文化研究科教授となり、さらに2004年には東京大学大学院法学政治学研究科教授になった。2019年に東京大学名誉教授となる。
2020年からは専修大学法科大学院の教授となり現在に至る。
著書
1985年から1996年の間に『信託法理と私法体系』、『買主の倒産における動産売主の保護』を出版し、2000年に『民法学説百年史 - 日本民法施行100年記念』や『民法研究ハンドブック』などを共著で出している。さらに2017年の「担保物権法」4版や2023年の「民法判例百選 I」9版なども出版した。

**Backstory and career**
Born in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture. His older brother, Masato Michigakiuchi, is a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo and is also a legal scholar. Their relationship began in 1966, when the older brother introduced his younger brother to Akira Yonekura, who was his student.
Graduated from Okayama Prefectural Okayama Sozan High School in 1978, and graduated from the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law, Class 1, in 1982. After that, he worked as an assistant at the same university, a lecturer in the social sciences department at the University of Tsukuba, and an assistant professor at the faculty of law at Kobe University.In 2000, he became a professor at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo, and in 2004, he became a professor at the Graduate School of Law and Political Science at the University of Tokyo. In 2019, he became a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo.
From 2020, he became a professor at Senshu University Law School, where he currently remains.
Book
Between 1985 and 1996, he published ``Trust Doctrine and Private Law System'' and ``Protection of Seller of Movable Property in the Case of Buyer's Bankruptcy'', and in 2000 he co-authored ``Civil Law Theory - 100 Years of Enforcement of the Japanese Civil Code'' and ``Civil Law Research Handbook''. In addition, he has published the 4th edition of ``Collateral Property Law'' in 2017 and the 9th edition of ``Civil Law Cases I'' in 2023.
