1988年度ドラフト会議で高卒1年目にして、広島東洋カープや巨人などから熱心に誘われた横浜大洋ホエールズから1位指名を受けた。同年12月9日に契約金6000万円、年俸480万円の条件で入団に合意し、入団契約を締結した。
大洋・横浜時代
プロ1年目の1989年に下関球場で行われたオープン戦で巨人・斎藤雅樹から本塁打を放つなど結果を残すと監督の古葉竹識に抜擢され、高卒1年目にもかかわらず、開幕一軍入りを果たした。
公式戦初打席で初安打を放つと1年目から一軍にフル帯同し、出場80試合、打率.175、3本塁打、10打点という成績を残す。谷繁は「高校から入った僕はまだ子供でしたから、ケガをしないように甘やかされていました」と述べている。
