Kido was born on November 15, 1872 near Sengakuji Temple in Takanawa, Tokyo. His father was a former retainer of the Tokugawa Shogunate and worked as a secretary at the British Legation. Kido also studied English and Kabuki, and wanted to become a playwright, so he wrote theater reviews and social exploration articles while working at a newspaper company.
In 1891, he published ``Takamatsu Castle'' in the Tokyo Nichinichi Shimbun, and began his career as a novelist. In 1896, he published his first play, ``Shishinden,'' in Kabuki Shimpo, and became recognized as the creator of new Kabuki.
Kido devoted himself to writing since 1913, writing numerous long-form newspaper serials, detective stories, and bizarre ghost stories. In 1916, he wrote Japan's first Okahiki torimono novel, ``Hanshichi Torimonocho,'' which gained popularity for its portrayal of Japanese people full of the Edo period atmosphere.
Although he lost his books and diary in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, he took shelter in the house of his disciple Rokufuku Nukata. In 1930, he published and supervised the monthly magazine ``Butai.'' In 1937, he became the first member of the Academy of Fine Arts from the theater world.
Kido died in 1939 at his home in Kamimeguro due to complications of bronchitis and pulmonary infiltrates. His posthumous posthumous name is Jōrakuin Kidō Nikkei Koji. After his death, Keiichi Okamoto, a former student and adopted heir, founded the publishing company ``Aogabo'' with the aim of preserving and disseminating Kido's works.
