**激動の「昭和」に活躍した小説家**
小説家・劇作家。戦後の日本文学界を代表する作家で、ノーベル文学賞候補にも選ばれた。修辞に富んだ文体と唯美的な作風が特徴。また、政治的国粋主義的な傾向があり、晩年は民兵組織「楯の会」を結成し、1970年にクーデターを計った末に自衛隊市ヶ谷駐屯地で割腹自殺した。
小説では、『仮面の告白』『潮騒』『金閣寺』など。戯曲では、『近代能楽集』『鹿鳴館』『サド侯爵夫人』などがある。
