東洋史学者。東京外国語大学名誉教授。専門は満洲史・モンゴル史で、中国・日本史論についても著述している。1966年より、東京外国語大学アジア・アフリカ言語文化研究所の助教授として勤務し、その後教授に昇進した。その後、1993年に定年退官し、名誉教授となった。その後は、常磐大学国際学部教授を務め、2000年に退職した。2017年5月25日、心不全により逝去。
