日本の小説家・推理作家・歌手。兵庫県芦屋市出身。玉川大学農学部卒業。ペンネームである道尾秀介は、都筑道夫から由来する。本名の秀介は自身の名前である。
作家としての活動を始める前
17歳のときに交際していた女性の影響で小説を読み始めた。当時好んで読んでいた太宰治と川端康成の小説を読み、横溝正史の作品もテレビ放送された映画『獄門島』を見たきっかけで読み始める。19歳のときに作家になろうと思い、小説を書きはじめた。
2002年には、第9回日本ホラー小説大賞短編賞の最終候補作になる「手首から先」を発表した。この頃は自身のホームページ「シロウト作家の訴え」を作り、「オグロアラダ」といった自作小説を公開していた。
小説家としての活動
2004年に『背の眼』で第5回ホラーサスペンス大賞特別賞を受賞し、小説家デビュー。2006年には、作品がミステリー・ランキングにおいて上位にランクインするようになり、相次いで文学賞にノミネートされるようになる。
2009年に発表したふたつの長編『ラットマン』『カラスの親指』が共に高く評価され、『このミステリーがすごい!』2009年版で作家別投票第1位に選ばれる。2010年には、オリコン年間本ランキングの文庫部門で第1位になる作品を発表する。
2011年に初めて取材旅行を行った『月と蟹』で第144回直木賞を受賞（木内昇『漂砂のうたう』と同時受賞）。5回連続で直木賞の候補になったのは戦後最多記録である。直木賞の副賞である賞金は、東日本大震災の被害者に全額寄付された。
音楽活動
作家としての活動の他、谷本賢一郎と音楽ユニット「DEN」を組んでライブを行っている。また、自身が作詞・作曲した「HIDE AND SECRET」が2020年2月7日にソニー・ミュージックエンタテインメントより配信開始し、歌手デビューとなった。

Japanese novelist, mystery writer, and singer. Born in Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. Graduated from Tamagawa University Faculty of Agriculture. His pen name Shusuke Michio comes from Michio Tsuzuki. His real name, Shusuke, is his own name.
Before starting my career as a writer
He started reading novels when he was 17, influenced by a woman he dated. He read novels by Osamu Dazai and Yasunari Kawabata, which he liked at the time, and started reading Seishi Yokomizo's works after seeing the TV movie ``Gokumonjima.'' When I was 19 years old, I decided to become a writer and started writing novels.
