北海道出身であり、桑沢デザイン研究所を経て広告代理店に勤務した。その後、独自の個性的なイラストやデザインで知られるようになるが、バブル崩壊後の不景気の影響により仕事が減り会社から退職。独立して小さなデザイン会社を設立。しかし、その会社も仕事が少なくて困窮する。
その後、休日などに暇つぶしとして、作品の構想は漫画のネタとして考えたものであったが、小説『姑獲鳥の夏』を書き上げた。その後、『狂骨の夢』と続々と執筆依頼が舞い込んできた。自身の会社に対して、まだ思いがけず本があっさりと発売されたことの恥ずかしさで伝えれずにいたが、講談社からの依頼で『魍魎の匣』執筆に入る段階で隠すのが心苦しくなって事情を話し、さらに『狂骨の夢』発売後には他の出版社からも執筆依頼が殺到し始め、会社での仕事は出来にくくなったため、会社は一旦退職して外部スタッフとして仕事も継続することとなった。その後は自身の単行本や出版社の一部の書籍デザインを会社が担当している。
著作として、本格ミステリ小説の新風（新しい流れ）を生み出し、『姑獲鳥の夏』『魍魎の匣』『嗤う伊右衛門』など数多くの作品を発表した。日本でのiPad発売と同日に電子書籍として『死ねばいいのに』を発売。また、四六判・ノベルス・分冊文庫・電子書籍の4形態で『ルー＝ガルー2 インクブス×スクブス 相容れぬ夢魔』を出版。出版史上初のことであった。
また、小説家のみならず、『ゲゲゲの鬼太郎』第4作101話で脚本および自身をモデルにしたゲストキャラ「一刻堂」のキャラクターデザインと声優を担当。『巷説百物語』がテレビアニメ化された際には声優として京極亭役を演じている。また、京極の処女作を原作とした映画『姑獲鳥の夏』では傷痍軍人（水木しげる）役として出演している。
2023年3月1日、日本文学振興会が退任した北方謙三の後任として直木賞選考委員への就任をツイッターで発表した。

In addition to being a novelist, he was also in charge of the script for the 101st episode of the 4th series of GeGeGe no Kitaro, as well as the character design and voice actor for the guest character Ikkokudou, who was modeled after himself.
