父はリトアニア系ユダヤ人で、チーズなどの輸入を行う貿易会社の経営者ソル・サリンジャー、母はスコットランド=アイルランド系のカトリック教徒の娘マリーであった。当時に関わらず現代においても、一般的な宗教観念として、ユダヤ人とカトリック教徒という異教徒同士が結婚するということは、宗教的に祝福されうるものではなかった。母であるマリーはそれらの宗教的・社会的な非難を避けるために、名前をユダヤ人風である「ミリアム」に改名している。

Born on January 1, 1919 in Manhattan, New York.
His father was Sol Salinger, a Lithuanian Jew who ran a trading company that imported cheese, and his mother was Marie, a Scottish-Irish Catholic. Regardless of the time, and even today, as a general religious concept, marriage between Jews and Catholics was not something that could be celebrated religiously. To avoid such religious and social criticism, his mother Marie changed her name to Miriam, which sounds Jewish.
In 1932, he enrolled at Mark Burni School (Boarding School). Around this time, he became interested in theater, and in his entrance interview he answered, ``I'm interested in theater and tropical fish.'' Anti-Semitism was on the rise in the United States in the 1930s, and Salinger, who had a Jewish-sounding first name of "Jerome," struggled to fit in. As a result, he was expelled from school after one year due to poor academic performance. He then enrolled at Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania, where he remained until graduation. Since this school was a so-called military academy, he received a rigorous education as a cadet. Salinger began writing his novel by flashlight in his dormitory after lights out, wrapped in a blanket.
