Kenzaburo Oe was a representative novelist of modern Japanese literature who was active from the mid-Showa period to the late Heisei period. Born in Ose Village, Kita District, Ehime Prefecture (currently Uchiko Town). After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he won the Akutagawa Prize and gained attention as a budding novelist. Thereafter, with his rich imagination and unique writing style, he created a world of works with themes such as social and political issues such as nuclear weapons and the imperial system, coexistence with his mentally disabled eldest son, and the history and folklore of his hometown, a village in the valley in the forest of Shikoku.
