吉川真司は、京都大学名誉教授。専攻は日本古代史。近畿地方出身であり、奈良県生まれ。1979年3月に東大寺学園高等学校卒業し、京都大学文学部に入学。岸俊男や鎌田元一などを師事した。1989年に助手として採用され、1996年に助教授となり、2007年には准教授、2008年から教授を務めた。

**A historian who elucidated the politics and culture of ancient Japan**
Shinji Yoshikawa is a professor emeritus at Kyoto University. My major is ancient Japanese history. He is from the Kinki region and was born in Nara Prefecture. Graduated from Todaiji Gakuen High School in March 1979 and entered the Faculty of Letters, Kyoto University. He studied under Toshio Kishi and Genichi Kamata. He was hired as an assistant professor in 1989, became an assistant professor in 1996, became an associate professor in 2007, and became a professor in 2008.
Research content/achievements
While attending university, Shinji Yoshikawa belonged to the Kyoto University Archeology Research Group, where he was involved in surveys of the Iwakura Old Kiln Sites and other sites. He critically inherited the research on ancient bureaucracy by Tadashi Ishimoda and Shohachi Hayakawa, and clarified the reorganization of the Ritsuryo government system in the latter half of the 10th century. Furthermore, the Regency period in the latter half of the 10th century, which was regarded as the ``early authoritarian government,'' is evaluated as the starting point of the Middle Ages.

His works include ``Heiankyo'' and ``Ritsuryo Koku''. He has co-edited books such as ``Kanjujike Honshoku Shobu Rui'' and ``Todaiji Temple in History,'' and has published many series that incorporate archeology and historical material research.
