Santoka Taneda is a representative haiku poet of Japanese free-form haiku. He is ranked alongside Houya Ozaki, a doujin under Suimon Ogiwara Izumi. Due to Santouka's drinking habit, it was difficult for him to make a living, so he lived with the support of his teachers, Izumizu and Kanezakichi Togoson.
Although his haiku follow a free-flowing form, their content is extremely deep and melancholy. His representative works include ``Sokito'' and ``Gyogouki.'' These are reflections of his wandering life and the profound influence of his mother's death.
He is also known for his translation of Turgenev, and according to Kaneko Kabuta, his father Takejiro was said to have resembled his father.
