国際関係論や比較社会学が専門で、日本で初めて国際関係論の教鞭を執った。南方熊楠や柳田國男など歴史的研究家の仕事にも寄与した。
社会学者としては、戦後の日本の生活文化や女性問題に関わる作品を多数発表し、「自己を含む集団の研究」を提唱。「思想の科学」同人会議を立ち上げ、共産党員になった時期もあった。1950年代には「日本作文の会」の活動に関わった。また「生活をつづる会」というグループを結成し、「母の歴史」「仲間のなかの恋愛」を著した。
トロント大学やプリンストン大学で客員教授としても活躍し、八王子大学セミナーハウスで思想の冒険グループを立ち上げた。日本国連代表部公使候補にもあったことがある。「思想の科学」同人会議の創設に関わったこともあり、その関係で共産党に入党した時期もあった。
晩年には車椅子生活となりながら著作集や対談集を刊行し、2006年に大腸がんにより88歳で亡くなりました。
