下僕は日本で平安時代以後から太閤検地までにおける荘官や鎌倉時代・室町時代における地頭の雑役に従事した雑人です。江戸時代以後は年季奉公人のことです。
南北朝時代以降、土地を与えられ自立する下人が現れました。また、従来の家内従属性が薄れていくことで、その職務も耕作や雑務、馬引きなどに変化していきました。近世では農地の小規模独立経営を推進する政策が採られ、譜代相伝の下僕は姿を消したのに対し、年季奉公中心のものが定着しました。
