**華厳思想の解明者、仏教学者の雄飛**
鎌田 茂雄（かまた しげお）は日本の仏教学者。中国仏教史研究に多大な業績があります。学位は文学博士で、東京大学名誉教授です。僧侶としては慧忍と呼ばれていました。
彼は神奈川県鎌倉市で生まれました。陸軍幼年学校を卒業し、次に駒澤大学予科に入学しました。その後は円覚寺で参禅しています。
戦後、彼は東京大学東洋文化研究所の助手に採用されました。そして、後に教授になりました。1962年に『華厳思想史研究：澄観を中心として』という論文を提出して文学博士号を取得しました。
彼はまたメディアへの出演も多く、NHKの「こころの時代」で講師を務めました。また、彼は母校の駒澤大学や筑波大学、九州大学、大阪大学、富山大学、大正大学などで非常勤講師を兼任しました。1988年に東京大学を退官し、名誉教授となりました。その後は愛知学院大学教授として教鞭をとりました。

Shigeo Kamata is a Japanese Buddhist scholar. He has made significant achievements in researching the history of Chinese Buddhism. His degree is Doctor of Letters and he is Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo. As a monk, he was called Keinin.
He was born in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. After graduating from the Army Infantry School, I entered Komazawa University Preparatory Course. After that, I practiced Zen at Engakuji Temple.
