**“The development of Japanese folklore”**
Kunio Yanagida is a Japanese bureaucrat and folklorist. After graduating from Tokyo Imperial University Law School, he became a bureaucrat in the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce and rose to the position of Chief Secretary of the House of Peers. He was then appointed Privy Councillor, and served until the Privy Council was abolished. Member of the Japan Academy, Japan Art Academy, Person of Cultural Merit, and recipient of the Order of Culture. His rank and honor are Seisanmi (Senior Third Rank) and First Class.
Influenced by his birthplace, Kunio Yanagida traveled throughout the Japanese archipelago and overseas in search of an answer to the question of what it means to be Japanese.
