天明3年（1783年）から信濃・越後を経て出羽・陸奥・蝦夷地を旅し、紀行文や随筆を書きました。壮年期になると各地の旅行を行いつつも藩に仕え、寛政7年（1795年）から津軽弘前藩で採薬御用などを勤めました。しかし、他藩の間者（スパイ）かと疑われ日記や紀行が押収され軟禁に処されたため、一部の著作が現存しなくなりました。
享和元年（1801年）に久保田藩（秋田）に移り、那珂通博・高階貞房・鳥屋長秋らの文人の知遇を得て久保田藩に出仕しました。以降は久保田藩に留まったということです。

As a boy, he studied Japanese studies under Yoshikata Ueda of the Mikawa Yoshida domain and trained in Japanese literature and topography. From 1783, he traveled to Shinano and Echigo, Dewa, Mutsu, and Ezochi, writing travelogues and essays. In his prime, he traveled extensively and served the domain, and from 1795 he worked as a medicine collector for the Tsugaru Hirosaki domain. However, because he was suspected of being a spy for another domain, his diary and travelogue were confiscated, and he was placed under house arrest, so some of his writings no longer exist.
