Historian. Majoring in early modern Japanese history. Professor at the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, University of Tokyo, and Professor at the Historiographical Institute, the University of Tokyo.
Born in 1957 in Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture. Studied in the Japanese History Specialization Course at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo, graduating in 1980. He entered the Graduate School of Humanities, University of Tokyo, and completed his master's degree in 1982.
