東京都足立区生まれ。日本の絵本作家として活躍し、代表作に「14ひきのひっこし」といったシリーズがあります。このシリーズは、「14匹のねずみが、豊かな自然の中で楽しく生活する姿」を描いており、2008年までに累計92万冊、「あさごはん」は101万冊を売り上げました。また、このシリーズは総合発行部数が800万部を超えています。
