**"New light on early modern Japanese history"**
Japanese historian and intellectual historian. Specializes in early modern Japanese history and intellectual history. He has served as professor emeritus at Hitotsubashi University, chairman of the History Research Group, and member of the Science Council of Japan.
Born in Gifu Prefecture, graduated from Gifu Prefectural Tajimi Kita High School and Aichi University of Education, Faculty of Education, Junior High School Social Studies. After serving as an assistant at the Research Institute for Japanese Culture attached to the Faculty of Letters at Tohoku University, an assistant professor at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Toyama, and an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Sociology at Hitotsubashi University, in 2006 he became a professor in the Department of Historical and Social Studies (Social History of Japan) at the Graduate School of Sociology, Hitotsubashi University.
His publications include ``The Age of Reading the Taiheiki: A Concept for the History of Early Modern Political Thought'' and ``Early Modern Japan as Seen through Ando Masayoshi.'' A representative co-edited book is ``Perspectives on Japanese History 16: Early Modern Thought and Culture''.
