His major is the history of Japanese political thought, and his main areas of study are the modern emperor, the imperial family, and modern Shintoism.
His books include ``Direct Appeal and Royal Authority,'' ``The Idea of Izumo,'' ``Private City'' Osaka vs. ``Imperial Capital'' Tokyo, and ``Taisho Emperor,'' and he is also known as a railway fan, having previously published a series of ``Diagrams of History.'' Currently, he is giving lectures on the history of Japanese political thought and space and politics at the Open University of Japan.
