**A historian who elucidated the politics and culture of ancient Japan**
Shinji Yoshikawa is a professor emeritus at Kyoto University. My major is ancient Japanese history. He is from the Kinki region and was born in Nara Prefecture. Graduated from Todaiji Gakuen High School in March 1979 and entered the Faculty of Letters, Kyoto University. He studied under Toshio Kishi and Genichi Kamata. He was hired as an assistant professor in 1989, became an assistant professor in 1996, became an associate professor in 2007, and became a professor in 2008.
Research content/achievements
While attending university, Shinji Yoshikawa belonged to the Kyoto University Archeology Research Group, where he was involved in surveys of the Iwakura Old Kiln Sites and other sites. He critically inherited the research on ancient bureaucracy by Tadashi Ishimoda and Shohachi Hayakawa, and clarified the reorganization of the Ritsuryo government system in the latter half of the 10th century. Furthermore, the Regency period in the latter half of the 10th century, which was regarded as the ``early authoritarian government,'' is evaluated as the starting point of the Middle Ages.
