1942年（昭和17年）に生まれる。1965年に東京大学経済学部を卒業し、1969年から京都大学経済研究所助教授を務める。1971年には経済学博士の学位を取得。1980年から教授に昇進し、京都大学経済研究所所長などを歴任した。
