**「碁界に照らす薫和の光を残した」**

岩本薫（1902-1999）は、大正・昭和の囲碁棋士。第3、4期本因坊で本因坊 薫和と号する。日本棋院理事長や中央会館館長など多くの肩書きを持ち、世界各地で囲碁の普及に尽力した。

岩本薫は1926年に六段となり、その後ブラジルに移住し碁界から離れるが、2年後に帰国して復帰する。1945年の第3期本因坊戦挑戦者として橋本昭宇本因坊との六番勝負を戦い、三番勝負で本因坊に就位、「薫和」と号した。

岩本薫は碁界の大合同で日本棋院に加わり、1926年に六段となり、1935年の大手合甲組優勝を果たす。1948年から日本棋院理事長となり、その後1954年に中央会館の初代館長となる。また、ラジオ放送時代のNHK杯で優勝した。

岩本薫は国際囲碁普及にも情熱を注ぎ、アメリカ・ヨーロッパ各国・南米等を訪問して囲碁の指導と普及を行った。1975年にロンドンに囲碁会館を建設するも経営不振で閉館となるが、1986年に日本棋院に「薫和サロン」ビルを寄付し、その資金で岩本囲碁振興基金を設立した。

岩本薫は1972年勲三等瑞宝章受章、1976年サンフランシスコ文化勲章受章、1989年に棋道賞「国際賞」を受け、日本棋院顧問を務める。1999年に死去し、生誕100年を記念して島根県益田市では名誉市民の称号が贈られ、市立歴史民俗資料館では郷土の偉人として資料を展示している。
