Heibonsha Co., Ltd. is a well-known publisher of Japanese encyclopedias, publishing a wide variety of general books and academic publications. Founder Yasaburo Shimonaka established the company in 1914 to sell the small encyclopedia ``Ya, Kono Convenience''. Later, in 1923, it was reorganized as a stock company, and in 1931, it was on the verge of bankruptcy. However, Shimonaka himself planned and edited the 28-volume Encyclopedia, and established himself as an encyclopedia publisher. Toyo Bunko (launched in 1963), Bessatsu Taiyo (launched in 1972), and Heibonsha Library are series with a long history.
