**「人に愛の灯を灯した女性」**
渡辺和子はカトリック修道女で教育家。生まれは北海道旭川市ですが、台湾や東京などに転居する生活を送りました。
生後9歳のとき、二・二六事件が起きて父親は44発もの銃弾で命を落とし、その影響を受け15歳でキリスト教（カトリック）を信仰することを決めます。聖心女子大学を卒業して修道女となり、ボストンに留学したあと帰国後はノートルダム清心女子大学で教育学の研究を進めました。
1963年から36歳という異例の若さで学長になり、日本人として初めての栄誉をもたらします。1984年にマザー・テレサが来日した際には通訳を務めるなど多方面に活躍し、著書も多数執筆しました。
受賞歴は豊かで岡山県文化賞や山陽新聞賞、日本カトリック学校連合会理事長など複数の肩書きがあります。
2015年にペスタロッチ賞を受賞するが、その後膵臓癌を患い、2016年12月30日に89歳で亡くなりました。多磨霊園に眠っています。

Kazuko Watanabe is a Catholic nun and educator. Although I was born in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, I spent my life moving to places such as Taiwan and Tokyo.
When he was 9 years old, his father was killed by 44 bullets in the February 26 Incident, which led him to decide to become a Christian (Catholic) at the age of 15. After graduating from the University of the Sacred Heart and becoming a nun, she studied abroad in Boston, and upon returning to Japan, pursued research in education at Notre Dame Seishin University.
In 1963, at the unusually young age of 36, he became university president, making him the first Japanese to receive this honor. When Mother Teresa came to Japan in 1984, she was active in various fields, including acting as an interpreter, and wrote many books.
He has received numerous awards, including the Okayama Prefectural Cultural Award, the Sanyo Shimbun Award, and the Chairman of the Japan Federation of Catholic Schools.
Although he won the Pestalozzi Prize in 2015, he later developed pancreatic cancer and passed away on December 30, 2016 at the age of 89. He is buried at Tama Cemetery.
