東京大学教養学部フランス分科卒業後、岩波書店に入社。同社社員として勤務しながら、博士（学術）を取得した。その後講談社に移籍し、現在は同社の専属で活躍中。思想史学者として数多くの著作を手掛け、その研究内容は、言語論や西洋思想史に関するものが中心である。
