赤瀬川原平は、日本の前衛美術家、随筆家、作家として知られる。1937年に生まれた後、父親の転勤で大分県で育ち、その後名古屋に引っ越した。美術を志し、武蔵野美術学校油絵科中退。赤瀬川は芸術的なことに造詣が深く、「心はいつもアヴァンギャルド」といい、1958年に読売アンデパンダン展に初出品。

赤瀬川はゴム・チューブを素材としたオブジェを作成し、1962年にポスターカラーで描いた絵画「破壊の曲率」でシェル美術賞に入選。同じく1963年には、高松次郎・中西夏之とともにハイレッド・センターを結成。また、個人としても、扇風機などの身の回りの品物を包装紙で梱包する「梱包作品」を制作。
このコンセプトは最終的に、缶詰のラベルを缶の内側に貼って宇宙全体を梱包したと称する「宇宙の缶詰」に至る。赤瀬川は個人的にも、千円札裁判に関わっている。

Genpei Akasegawa is known as a Japanese avant-garde artist, essayist, and writer. After being born in 1937, he grew up in Oita Prefecture due to his father's transfer, and then moved to Nagoya. Wanting to pursue art, he dropped out of Musashino Art School's oil painting course. Akasegawa had a deep knowledge of artistic matters, and said that he was ``always in the avant-garde at heart,'' and exhibited his work for the first time at the Yomiuri Independent Exhibition in 1958.
Later, in 1960, he joined the ``Neo-Dadaism Organizers'' at the invitation of Masunobu Yoshimura. Ushio Shinohara's mother asked him to choose a name for him, but she told him that there weren't enough strokes in his name, so he adopted the pen name "Genpei," which has even fewer strokes than Katsuhiko.
Akasegawa created objects made from rubber tubes, and in 1962 his poster color painting ``Curvature of Destruction'' won the Shell Art Prize. Also in 1963, he formed Hi-Red Center with Jiro Takamatsu and Natsuyuki Nakanishi. Also, as an individual, I have created ``packing works'' in which personal items such as electric fans are wrapped in wrapping paper.
