Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927) was a Japanese novelist. After graduating from Tokyo Prefectural Third Junior High School, he enrolled in the English literature department of the first division of the first high school, and then went on to the English literature department of Tokyo Imperial University College of Letters. His creative activities began during his student days, when he published his first novel, ``Old Age,'' and later published one of his masterpieces, ``Rashomon.'' While working as an English instructor at the Naval Engineering School and at the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun, he published a series of short stories. There is also an early autobiographical novel called ``Tobacco and the Devil.''
