京都市生まれで、生家は西本願寺の末寺であった。1962年京都大学教育学部卒業後、NHKに入局し教養番組のチーフ・ディレクターを経て1987年に明治学院大学国際学部教授として招聘されました。その後、国際学部長や大学図書館長などを歴任した。
著書には「宗教の深層ー聖なるものへの衝動」、「法然入門」、「親鸞からの手紙」などがあります。また翻訳も多数あります。代表的なものに「無量寿経」があります。

Maro Amari is a Japanese religious scholar and professor emeritus at Meiji Gakuin University. Majoring in religious studies and history of Japanese thought.
Born in Kyoto City, his birthplace was a branch temple of Nishi Honganji Temple. After graduating from Kyoto University's Faculty of Education in 1962, he joined NHK and served as chief director of cultural programs, before being invited as a professor at the Faculty of International Studies at Meiji Gakuin University in 1987. After that, he held various positions including Dean of the Department of International Studies and Director of the University Library.
His books include ``The Deep Depths of Religion: The Impulse toward the Sacred,'' ``Introduction to Honen,'' and ``Letters from Shinran.'' There are also many translations available. A representative example is the ``Muryoju Sutra.''
