Kazuhiko Kondo was born in 1936 in Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture. He played baseball from 1948 to 1954, and appeared in Koshien for the first time in 1949. After that, he entered Meiji University and played an active role in the Tokyo Six Universities League. In 1955, he turned professional and joined the Taiyo Whales. In 1960, he recorded a batting average of .316, which was second in the league after his colleague Shigeo Nagashima, and contributed greatly to Japan's No. 1 ranking. He has also participated in the All-Star Game for nine consecutive years.
