After that, he entered Meiji University and played an active role in the Tokyo Six Universities League. In 1955, he turned professional and joined the Taiyo Whales. In 1960, he recorded a batting average of .316, which was second in the league after his colleague Shigeo Nagashima, and contributed greatly to Japan's No. 1 ranking.
