**「心臓病・脳卒中予防に貢献」**
日本の医師、医学者。従三位。京都帝国大学医学部出身で、聖路加国際病院名誉院長や上智大学日本グリーフケア研究所名誉所長を歴任した。また、公益財団法人笹川記念保健協力財団の名誉会長でもあった。
専門は内科学で、成人病と呼ばれてきた血栓によって起こされる心臓病・脳卒中の予防について研究し、「習慣病」と呼び、その考えを旧厚生省が1996年に「生活習慣病」と改めた。1983年には、地下鉄サリン事件では83歳で被害者640人の治療に当たり、院長として陣頭指揮を執った。
京都帝国大学医学部第三内科副手、大日本帝国海軍軍医少尉などを経て、聖路加看護大学学長や国際基督教大学教授を歴任した。また、日本循環器学会の名誉会員となり、勲二等瑞宝章および文化勲章を受章している。

A graduate of Kyoto Imperial University School of Medicine, he served as honorary director of St. Luke's International Hospital and honorary director of the Japan Grief Care Research Institute at Sophia University.
