池田は、東京で生まれた後、青春時代に肺病との闘病を経験。トルストイなどの文学に親しみ、詩作を行いました。その後、第二次世界大戦終了後に旧制東洋工業学校と大世学院（後の東京富士大学短期大学部）に通学し、1947年に創価学会を知るようになります。
池田は19歳で創価学会に入会し、青年部の活動を行いました。その後、1954年には青年部参謀室長に就任し、その後も創価学会の中核メンバーとして活躍しました。1960年に創価学会第3代会長に就任し、会長在任中は世界的に布教活動を強化しました。
