女優・文筆家。映画の代表作は『君の名は』『雪国』『おとうと』など。
生まれた神奈川県横浜市で、戦時中の大空襲で被災する。高校在学中に小牧バレエ団に通う。1951年に松竹に入社し、映画デビュー。1953年から1954年にかけて『君の名は』が大ヒット。
1955年にはシンガポールで開催された東南アジア映画祭最優秀女優賞を受賞した。同年、日本では鶴田浩二と共演した『亡命記』を上演し、国際的な評価も高まっていく。
その後はパリに移り、フランスと日本を往復しながら女優を続けた。「空飛ぶマダム」と言われた。

His hometown of Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, was damaged by a major air raid during the war. While in high school, attended the Komaki Ballet Company. Joined Shochiku in 1951 and made his film debut. "Your Name" was a huge hit from 1953 to 1954.
In 1955, she won the Best Actress Award at the Southeast Asian Film Festival held in Singapore. In the same year, he performed ``Exile'' in Japan with Koji Tsuruta, and his international reputation increased.
After that, she moved to Paris and continued to work as an actress while traveling back and forth between France and Japan. She was called "Flying Madame."
