日本の小説家、写真家。福岡県北九州市八幡西区生まれ。日本大学芸術学部映画学科卒。
代表作は「密命」シリーズと「居眠り磐音」シリーズなど。戦国時代を中心にした時代小説を主な活躍領域としている。また、冒険小説やミステリー小説も数多く発表している。
2007年から、NHK木曜時代劇『陽炎の辻〜居眠り磐音 江戸双紙〜』で時代劇への取り込みが始まり、テレビ東京金曜時代劇枠とNHK土曜時代劇枠でも時代小説をドラマ化している。
2018年には第66回菊池寛賞を受賞し、「文庫書き下ろし時代小説」という新たなジャンルを確立したことが評価された。

Japanese novelist and photographer. Born in Yahatanishi Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Film Studies, College of Art, Nihon University.
His representative works include the ``Hitsumei'' series and the ``Inuri Iwane'' series. His main area of activity is historical novels centered on the Sengoku period. He has also published many adventure novels and mystery novels.
In 2007, NHK's Thursday period drama series ``Kagero no Tsuji ~Inuri Iwane Edo Soshi~'' began incorporating historical novels, and historical novels have also been adapted into dramas on TV Tokyo's Friday period drama slot and NHK's Saturday period drama slot.
