A Taiwanese novelist and translator living in Japan. He is the first Chinese writer working in Japanese to win the Akutagawa Prize.
As a novelist, his representative works include Dokumai (Solitary Dance) and The Crescent Moon on the Count of Five. Some works feature sexual minorities who are openly lesbian. In Taiwan, he is favorable to the Democratic Progressive Party and the Sunflower Student Movement, but critical of the Chinese Nationalist Party.
He has also been forced to come out after being subjected to slander and outing. He also said about coming out after suffering from outing, ``It's not my true nature.''
