Yoichiro Hirata was a Kyoto Imperial University graduate who was active as a journalist and businessman, and was in contact with Japanese Communist Party chairman Kenji Miyamoto and constitutional scholar Morinao Ohno. After working as a reporter for the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun, he became the editorial director of the Ehime Godo Shimbun (currently the Ehime Shimbun) in 1942, and became president the following year. In 1953, he became president of Nankai Broadcasting when it opened. He narrowly lost in the 5th Ehime Prefecture gubernatorial election in 1963.
