Tokuro Nukui is a Japanese novelist and mystery writer, born in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo. He graduated from Waseda University's Faculty of Commerce.
He first applied for the 4th Seishi Yokomizo Award when he wrote a mystery (the prototype for "Kiryu Sesshōsai"). At that time, it was his only mystery novel, and afterward, he submitted fantasy sci-fi works to Hayakawa Shobo's Hayakawa SF Contest and Kodansha's Shōsetsu Gendai New Writer Award, but none of them passed the preliminary rounds.
On December 31, 1992, he resigned from the real estate company where he was employed. In 1993, "Wailing," which he wrote during a period of unemployment, became a finalist for the 4th Tetsuya Ayukawa Award (the winning work was Fumie Kondo's "Frozen Island"). Although he did not win the award, he received high praise from preliminary judge Kaoru Kitamura and editor Yasunobu Togawa, and his work was published by Tokyo Sogensha as one of the "Golden Thirteen," marking his debut as a writer. In 2002, a comment from Kaoru Kitamura on the obi of the Sōgen Mystery Bunko edition of "Wailing" stating, "The title is 'Wailing,' the writing style is 'masterful,' and after reading it, you'll be 'astonished'," became the catalyst for the book to become a hit, selling over 500,000 copies.
Although he had long been unassociated with literary awards, in 2010, he won the Shugoro Yamamoto Award for "The Color of Regret and Truth" and the 63rd Mystery Writers of Japan Award (for long novels and linked short story collections) for "Iridescent Reflection."
He is currently the representative director of the Mystery Writers of Japan.
