Hōsō Hakigi is a Japanese novelist and psychiatrist. His pen name, "Hōsō Hakigi," is taken from "Hahakigi," the second chapter, and "Yomogiu," the fifteenth chapter of *The Tale of Genji*.
Born in Ogori City, he graduated from Fukuoka Prefectural Meizen High School, then the Department of French Literature, Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo, and later Kyushu University School of Medicine. After graduating from the Department of French Literature at the University of Tokyo, he worked at TBS before resigning two years later to become a psychiatrist.
He gained recognition with "White Summer Tombstone" (1979) and won the 14th Eiji Yoshikawa Literary Newcomer Award for "Mitabi no Kaikyo" (1992). He has also written many works related to medicine, including "Fighting Gambling Addiction," written from his perspective as a psychiatrist.
In 2008, after writing "Shūshin" (included in *Fūka Byōtō*), he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia but recovered after six months of hospitalization. In 2019, he was appointed Ogori City's Furusato Cultural Ambassador, and in 2023, he retired from medical practice to dedicate himself to writing.
