日本の漫画家。代表作『名探偵コナン』と『YAIBA』は、それぞれ小学館漫画賞を受賞しており、テレビアニメ化やコンピュータゲーム化がされている。また、『まじっく快斗』『4番サード』などの作品もある。
生まれは鳥取県の大栄町で、日本大学芸術学部美術学科絵画コース卒。北栄町立大栄中学校時代、民藝運動に関わる染織家で美術教師の吉田たすくから絵を褒められ、「やりたいことがあったらそれをやったらいいよ」と薦められた。これがきっかけとなり、美術関係の道を考えるようになった。
大学時代は漫画研究部「熱血漫画根性会」に所属していたが、元々アニメーターだった青山は 漫研の先輩である矢野博之に「アニメーターよりも漫画家のほうが儲かる」と言われ、漫画家を目指すようになった。
1986年に小学館新人コミック大賞で入選し、その作『ちょっとまってて』でデビュー。大学卒業後は就職活動せずに生活費は『ひらけ!ポンキッキ』の背景を描くアルバイトをしたり、原稿を持ってきたりした。
1987年に『週刊少年サンデー』増刊号で『まじっく快斗』の連載を開始。1988年には、『週刊少年サンデー』でチャンバラアクション漫画『YAIBA』の連載を始め、初の長期連載となる。
1994年に『名探偵コナン』の連載を開始し、その後大ヒットを記録。現在までにテレビアニメ化や劇場版アニメも作られている。

Born in Daiei Town, Tottori Prefecture, graduated from Nihon University College of Art, Department of Art, Painting Course. During his university days, Aoyama was a member of the manga research club Nekketsu Manga Gekkokai, but Aoyama, who was originally an animator, started aiming to become a manga artist after Hiroyuki Yano, a senior at Manken, told him that ``You can make more money as a manga artist than an animator.''
In 1986, he was selected for the Shogakukan Newcomer Comic Award and made his debut with his work ``Cho Waitete.'' After graduating from university, he did not look for a job and instead worked part-time to draw the background for ``Hirake! Ponkikki'' and brought in manuscripts to pay for his living expenses.
In 1987, ``Magic Kaito'' began serialization in a special issue of ``Weekly Shonen Sunday''. In 1988, he began serializing the chanbara action manga ``YAIBA'' in ``Weekly Shonen Sunday'', which became his first long-term serialization.
Detective Conan began serialization in 1994 and became a huge hit. To date, a TV anime and movie version have also been made.
