日向夏は、ミカン科ミカン属の常緑低木の柑橘類であり、宮崎県に原産地がある。江戸時代の文政年間(1818-1829)に発見され、その後広く栽培された。果実は皮も果肉も黄色で食用となり、苦味がほとんどない。別名「小夏」や「ニューサマーオレンジ」とも呼ばれる。
