ヤコウチュウ（Noctiluca scintillans）は、海洋性のプランクトンである。夜に光り輝いて見える特徴があるが、昼には赤潮として姿を見せる。一般的な渦鞭毛虫とは異なり、細胞核は普通の真核であり、通常の細胞は複相である。発光はルシフェリン-ルシフェラーゼ反応によるもので、物理的な刺激を受けると光る特徴がある。

Noctiluca scintillans is a marine plankton. It has the characteristic of appearing shining at night, but appears as a red tide during the day. Unlike common dinoflagellates, the cell nucleus is normally eukaryotic, and normal cells are biphasic. Luminescence is due to the luciferin-luciferase reaction, and it has the characteristic of glowing when it receives physical stimulation.
