Atsushi Kurashima

English Summary
**"A life in which the weather communicates with the heart"**
Atsushi Kurashima (January 25, 1924 - August 3, 2017) was a Japanese meteorological essayist and meteorologist. Doctor of Science (Tokyo University of Education (currently University of Tsukuba)). He once worked as a weathercaster on television.
Born in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. His father was Motoya Kurashima, who published a newspaper related to Buddhism. His older brother is Itaru Kurashima, who served as the mayor of Nagano.
After graduating from the former Nagano Prefecture Nagano Junior High School (currently Nagano Prefecture Nagano High School) and the Graduate School of Meteorological Technical Officer Training Institute attached to the Central Meteorological Observatory (currently Meteorological University), he joined the Japan Meteorological Agency in 1949. He has served as chief forecaster of the Japan Meteorological Agency, chief of the forecast division of the Sapporo regional meteorological observatory, and director of the Kagoshima local meteorological observatory.
Retired from the Japan Meteorological Agency in 1984. He was invited by NHK, where he had a working relationship, to become an external commentator, and was in charge of weather information and weather casters on ``News Center 9 o'clock'', ``Nippon Islands Now 6 o'clock'', ``NHK Good Morning Sunday'', and ``NHK Morning Wide Sunday''. On the other hand, as a reporter, he was in charge of the "Atsushi Kurashima's Seasonal Traveler" corner of "NHK News Good Morning Japan." With his simple speaking style, he quickly became a popular weather caster.
After his wife's death, he developed depression and considered suicide, but with the help of his helper, he was admitted to the hospital for treatment and recovered. Due to his advanced age, he has been away from television ever since. In 2002, he wrote and published ``The Rain Will Never Stop: My Wife's Death, Depression, and Then...'', which describes his own experience with depression. After that, in addition to giving lectures, he also wrote essays on the weather. ``There is no end to the rain: My wife's death, depression, and then...'' was made into a drama by TV Asahi and aired on March 6, 2010, starring Asahi Uchida and Tsunehiko Watase.
Furthermore, weather forecasters were institutionalized in 1994, long after Kurashima retired from the Japan Meteorological Agency, and since Kurashima himself had been involved in meteorological work as a government official, he was working as a freelance weather caster under that qualification and was not involved in forecasting work. For this reason, Kurashima was not a weather forecaster, and even on his official website he identified himself as a ``weathercaster and doctor of science.''
In 1968, he received a Doctor of Science degree from Tokyo University of Education (now the University of Tsukuba) for his doctoral thesis, ``Research on winter and summer monsoons in East Asia based on dynamic concepts.''
He was diagnosed with renal pelvis cancer in 2015 and passed away on August 3, 2017 at a hospital in Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture. Died at the age of 93.
